If you had a choice would you buy a new wedding band or wear a family ring?

Question by Anna: If you had a choice would you buy a new wedding band or wear a family ring?
For months I have had a stunning princess cut sapphire and diamond wedding band picked out to go with my engagement ring.

But after a week at home for family reasons I think that is all going to change. My mother offered her original wedding band to me this past week.

A bit of a back story, My mothers original wedding set is white gold which she isn’t a big fan of, and she wore it until my late grandmother offered her wedding band (Yellow and White) gold to her when my gram got her mothers ring. Then on my parents 25th wedding anniversary my dad got her a yellow gold anniversary ring, so now she has essentially a second wedding set which she wears daily.

Her wedding band is a simple white gold band with a ridge on both sides and hasn’t been worn in years. It fits perfectly and just needs cleaned and polished to be back to brand new condition. I really want to take it as it will mean a lot to me and I KNOW it will mean a lot to my mother (she made that clear) and it looks really good with my e-ring. Plus it saves us $ 600 on a fancy band which right now could go A LONG way with me being the only income while the FH finishes law school.

My only hang up is this: I have a 14 year old sister who I am worried is going to feel hurt that our mother offered something to me that she will never have the opportunity to have. My mother doesn’t keep a lot of “Special” jewelry and I KNOW she will never part with the ring her mother gave her, so there isn’t really anything for my sister to have someday. I don’t want to create hard feelings, but to wear my mothers ring would mean so much to me as well as meaning TONS to my mother.

What would a wedding band be worth?

Goldsmith | 13/11/2011 | 4 Comments

Question by vaio585: What would a wedding band be worth?
I’m looking to sell a plain, 14k white gold wedding ring. I believe it is a size 6, but could be wrong. I’m not sure how this affects selling price. It has a milgrain edge, and has literally never been word. Sadly, the wedding was called off. I bought it at a reputable place, Ross Simons I believe. If I were to sell it, would it be better to sell on eBay or craigslist?

Best answer:

Answer by fizzy stuff
It wont be worth much. How much did you pay for it? Youll be lucky to get 25% of what you paid.

I dont know Ross Simons. Usually a brand wont affect the price positively unless its a “5th Avenue” type brand: Cartier, Harry Winston, etc.

Personally, I would go with eBay. Craigslist seems shady to me, though I admit Ive never used it.

My husbands wedding band is Tungsten Carbide. I wanted to get him something that he would actually wear…?

Question by brn_eid_grl: My husbands wedding band is Tungsten Carbide. I wanted to get him something that he would actually wear…?
plus be very durable and not bend since he works with his hands. Usually when it got oily or dingy I could polish it back with a soft polishing cloth. This time it’s not working. The inside of the band is still shiny but the outside looks like unpolished stainless steel. He’s not sure if a chemical that he was working with last week did it or what. He can’t remember what it was exactly, some kind of degreaser for cement he thinks. Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong or what I can use to clean it that’s not going to damage it plz?

Take it to a jeweler and ask them to buff it for you. They will use a jeweler’s rouge and a buffing wheel and it just takes a couple of minutes. It won’t erase deep gouges but you will be very pleasantly surprised. They should be able to do it while you wait and the service will be free at a better shop. :)

Q&A: Would a platinum engagement ring go with a titanium wedding band?

Question by Sheena: Would a platinum engagement ring go with a titanium wedding band?
My fiance gave me a platinum three stone, princess cut engagement ring. I found a titanium wedding band that I really, really like and would like to get, but I’m not sure if it’ll look alright mixed with the platinum.

Answer by SoCalGal75
If you don’t mind the shiny metal mixed with dull metal. Platinum’s too nice to mix with titanium. I would match them. But the choice is up to you.

How much would it cost to re-size a gold band ring?

Goldsmith | 27/09/2011 | 1 Comment

Question by Erica P: How much would it cost to re-size a gold band ring?
Recently, I’ve come in possession of a 14k wedding band type of ring that I would really like to have re-sized. I’m not sure what size it is at the moment, I think it may be a 7 or a 7.5, and I need it to be either and 8 or and 8.5. How much on average would it cost to get this ring re-sized?

Best answer:

Answer by Vian L
Take it to local jeweler and they can have it re sized within 3 days at the cost of about 25 dollars. As you want to make it to a bigger size, the jeweler will make the band thinner so that it can be bigger.

What kind of wedding band would look best with this ring?

Goldsmith | 19/09/2011 | 7 Comments

Question by ilf rettub: What kind of wedding band would look best with this ring?
I’m trying to decide what type of wedding band would look best with the ring I want. Obviously a plain wedding band would work great, but I also really like the look of a princess cut channel set band and am wondering if it would be a good match for the engagement ring I like or if it would look mismatched? It’s so hard for me to tell without having the rings in hand.

Here is a picture of the engagement ring I would like:

And here is a picture of a princess cut channel set wedding band:

you have good taste, I think those are great together. it’s always best for the stones in the band to match the shape of the stones in the e-ring. make sure you go into the store and hold those 2 rings next to each other to make sure that band fits well against the e-ring setting though. my rings are a set that were made to go together, but those rings are not.

Answer by Because I Said So
you’d have to bring it to a few jewelers and see what they have. you could get a plain band to go next to it, they make different widths, or you could get a wrap that looks like 1 band on each side of the e-ring. ask your married friends where they got their rings and go to those recommended stores.

how much do you think a gold wedding band from 1958 with 14k gold would bring?

Question by denajo95: how much do you think a gold wedding band from 1958 with 14k gold would bring?

Best answer:

Answer by maxmom56
Unless it’s a signed designer piece, it would probably sell for it’s weight (58% (14k) of the current price of gold x weight) plus perhaps a small premium.

The gold will be slightly different. Take the engagement ring to wherever the wedding ring is and compare them. Depending on the rings themselves, you might not be able to notice.
