Not sure about Tungsten Carbide, but many men who work in fields where a ring could get lost or damaged, are getting wedding band tattoos.

Q&A: Is Tungsten Carbide steel?

Goldsmith | 07/12/2011 | 0 Comments

Question by San: Is Tungsten Carbide steel?
Hello,
I have been thinking about buying a Tungsten Carbide Diamond wedding band for my husband but one of my family members keep telling me that Tungsten Carbide is merely steel and hence, a low quality metal, therefore, I shouldn’t buy it.
I don’t really know much about it. Please if anyone can tell me more about this metal?
Thanks.

Answer by Steve-A
Tungsten is not steel. Tungsten is a chemical element. What they do is add an alloy mixture to tungsten and it turns into Tungsten Carbide. You want to find a ring with a nickel alloy, some manufacturers cheap out and add cobalt instead. Make sure the ring you buy does not contain cobalt.

Steel is an alloy consisting mostly of iron, with a carbon.

Tungsten Carbide Ring Removal

How to break a Tungsten Carbide Ring using a vice. www.isisjewellers.co.uk If for any reason a tungsten carbide ring gets stuck on the finger, the only way to remove it is to compress it in some kind of vice. As you can see it doesn’t bend very much thus preventing further damage to the finger

Are tungsten carbide rings worth buying/having as a men’s wedding band vs. others like gold, platnum, etc.?

Goldsmith | 28/11/2011 | 4 Comments

Question by Wes: Are tungsten carbide rings worth buying/having as a men’s wedding band vs. others like gold, platnum, etc.?
Does it shine well?
Does it keep its shine?
Will it scratch?
Is it heavy?
Is it expensive?

Answer by pspoptart
My HTB got a tungsten ring.

It’s very shine and tungsten is one of the most durable wedding ring materials out there next to titanium so it’s very, very hard to scratch it. They aren’t like sterling silver and will keep their shine even if you don’t use a polishing cloth.

Tungsten is heavier then titanium. Titanium is so light you almost can’t feel it. Some people like this feature, my husband prefered something he could feel in case (god forbid) it ever fell off. Our jewler also said that many men who orginally want titanium switch to tungsten because of the same reason as my husband or because they can’t understand how something so light could be so durable. It feels slightly heaver than gold and about the same as a decent platinum ring.

Some people have certain gold allergies (for instance anything less than 10k) whereas tungsten and titanium are very hypoallergenic. Another really durable allergy-free metal is stainless steel. It can be brushed or shiny but hasn’t caught on in popularity so very few jewlers use it. Our jeweler mentioned that some allergies were not to gold but to nickle which gold used to be cut with….the lower the carat the more nickle. However nickle is so hazardous to work with most companies have found a substitute that I can’t pronounce much less spell. lol.

He got a 7mm comfort fit band with a plain polished finish (looked like white gold) for $ 120 dollars including the lifetime warranty for the life of the ring. Depending on how complicated the design and where you are shopping they can go as low $ 50/$ 60 dollars or we saw the exact same ring for $ 500 because it was a higher end store. The mom and pop’s would have wanted $ 300 for his ring.

If you want to set stones, do special designs, or engrave a special message you really can’t do those things with titanium or tungsten so those may not be for you. They are choesn for their durability and low maitenence.

The other drawback (for some people) is that a tungsten or titanium band can’t be resized in the traditional sense. The metal is too hard. Instead what the store does is order a ring in the correct size with the same design.

I think palladium and platinum are a waste of money personally. They cost three times as much as gold, require just as much upkeep if not more in some cases. Unless you really wanna brag you have platinum pick another metal.

Tungsten Carbide Scratch-able?

Goldsmith | 13/11/2011 | 0 Comments

Question by Greg Seage: Tungsten Carbide Scratch-able?
I Have This Tungsten Carbide Wedding Band With A Carbon Fiber Part In The Middle, I Know The Shinny Tungsten Part Of The Ring Doesn’t Scratch Because it’s The Tungsten Part Of The Ring But What About The Middle Part? It’s Covered By Something That Looks Like Glass Or Something Else That’s Clear So You Can See The Carbon Fiber In The Middle, It Is Really Smooth Where It Goes From The Clear Glass To The Metal Tungsten Part Like If It Was Just 1 Material. Like I Can’t See Or Feel Any Rough Part Between Those 2 Materials When I Rub My Finger Over It. And I Have Tried To Scratch The Metal And The Glass Looking Thing With A Nail and Nothing Happens To Both, I Know That If I Hit The Tungsten Part With A Metal Sludge Hammer I Won’t Scratch Even A Bit But I’m Afraid If I Do A Scratch Test With The Middle Part It Will Scratch Since It’s Not Metal. So Can Someone Tell Me What The Middle Part Is And Why It Looks Like It’s Part Of The Tungsten? And Also If It’s Scratch-able? Here Is A Picture Of My Ring: http://i28.tinypic.com/5ma89e.jpg

Best answer:

Answer by Salma ????
The tungsten part is not scratachable as this is a high density material. All other materials, regardless of what alloy is used is prone to scratches. Why do you want to risk testing it? Generally jewelry which has some tungsten in it will also have high density alloys which makes it harder to scratch but it would certainly not be totally scratch proof.

Ar there any women out there who wear Tungsten Carbide wedding rings?

Goldsmith | 21/10/2011 | 4 Comments

Question by jayvivileesmommee: Ar there any women out there who wear Tungsten Carbide wedding rings?
Or just plain tungsten or titanium—-basically any other metal besides the usual three suspects: yellow gold, platinum, and white gold. If so, what did you choose and why? Is there an unspoken no against wedding bands for women in any but the above three metals? For those who have Tungsten rings—are they heavy? Women’s bodies change throughout the month, has any monthly bloating affected your ability to wear the ring(I’ve heard they have to be “dead on” in terms of sizing)

Best answer:

Answer by Special K
Tungsten is a little heavy for a womans ring. I think platinum is the best for a woman. You can also have the exact sizing done once you give it to her, they will never be dead on, for instance, mine fits different in the summer verses the winter.

Another thing you might want to know about tungsten is if you are wearing this ring and are ever in an accident, your finger swells. The ring can not be cut off. The same thing goes for titanium.

My husbands wedding band is Tungsten Carbide. I wanted to get him something that he would actually wear…?

Question by brn_eid_grl: My husbands wedding band is Tungsten Carbide. I wanted to get him something that he would actually wear…?
plus be very durable and not bend since he works with his hands. Usually when it got oily or dingy I could polish it back with a soft polishing cloth. This time it’s not working. The inside of the band is still shiny but the outside looks like unpolished stainless steel. He’s not sure if a chemical that he was working with last week did it or what. He can’t remember what it was exactly, some kind of degreaser for cement he thinks. Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong or what I can use to clean it that’s not going to damage it plz?

Answer by J S
Take it to a jeweler and ask them to buff it for you. They will use a jeweler’s rouge and a buffing wheel and it just takes a couple of minutes. It won’t erase deep gouges but you will be very pleasantly surprised. They should be able to do it while you wait and the service will be free at a better shop. :)
